Description

Meet James Patterson's most compelling hero yet: Detective Michael Bennett, as he pursues the most diabolical criminal ever to terrify New York City. During a state funeral for a former First Lady in New York City's largest cathedral, the unthinkable occurs. Armed men disguised as monks seize the church and seal themselves inside, along with over one hundred of the most powerful people in America. The captives include world leaders, actors, TV stars, athletes, and politicians. The kidnappers are armed with enough explosives to blow a crater in the middle of Manhattan.

NYPD officer Michael Bennett is pulled into the standoff as lead negotiator. Despite the escalating danger, Michael faces an even more terrifying crisis at home. His wife has been diagnosed with a devastating disease, and Michael faces the prospect of losing the love of his life and having to raise their ten children alone. With his own life teetering and the lives of thousands suddenly his responsibility, Michael struggles to diffuse the tense situation. Yet the kidnappers' moves are impossible to predict, and they block every attempt to break into the cathedral, almost as if they are privy to their deliberations.

Reviews

AudioFile Magazine...
Narrators John Slattery and Reg Rogers perform this unusual combination of thriller and family drama--complete with musical breaks and sound effects. Rogers captures the menacing nature of Jack, an intimidating killer who engineers a kidnapping at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Slattery assumes the character of NYPD Senior Homicide Detective and Hostage Negotiator Michael Bennett, matching mood to voice as the plot intensifies. When the story makes its frequent switches from the cathedral drama to Bennett's dying wife, the mood abruptly changes. Although each narrator embraces his role with authenticity, the odd combination of cold-blooded murder and family scenes, with youngsters' happy voices at the breakfast table, didn't work for me.
